I would say try Ursula Vernon, who's best known for her kids' book series Dragonbreath, but has also won a Hugo for her comic Digger, and writes more adult (not in the sexytimes sense) books under the name T. Kingfisher--except much as I love her stuff, there's some stuff in her work that reminds me of Pratchett and Gaiman. Maybe Robin Mckinley, but she hasn't written much for adults.
