If you're interested in going abroad, I recommend traveling with Topdeck or Busabout. I did both of those companies as a solo traveler but you're in a group so there's always someone around. Topdeck does do some US tours and they don't do single supplements, but you're paired to share with people of the same sex.

Feel free to ask me any questions! I went to Europe with both of them and they are super budget conscious for Europe. (I spent $2500 the first time, and $3000 the second time, including flight and food)
