David Eddings? I found the first Belgariath book boring but most people swear for it, and the Elenium/Tamuli sagas are FUCKING AWESOME.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Artemis Fowl books are very fun. The first two are genuinely good, and the rest a bit less but stil fun and funny. The MC (Artemis) is a preteen but since he's a Hollywood Genius he doesn't act much like one, and the other two MCs (Holly and Butler) are adults.
