I never played MMOs, but

I played text-based roleplaying games a bunch, and I often played a dude character.

The reasons didn't have to do with trying to be more comfortable (I was always comfortable as a girl, even when that gets me yelled at) but the characters I wanted to write--but it wasn't a big deal. Frankly as long as you aren't leading someone on IRL there's no reason to bother them. And if you conduct yourself responsibly who is going to be horrified to find out you're a guy? If they are, well. To hell with them.
