He was invented for an online "Creepy Pictures" challenge on the Something Awful forums.
His basic story seems to include kidnapping children, killing any and all adults who know about him, including burning down places that retain photos of him, driving people insane if he doesn't kill immediately them. The various vlog series like Marble Hornets tend to have stories about someone investigating the death of another person and starting to uncover information about the dead person being stalked by Slenderman, frequent video distortion indicating Slenderman's presence, people suffering from nausea and other illnesses when he's around, sometimes with characters who disappear turning up as "Proxies", or puppets being controlled by Slenderman.
The game "Slender: The Eight Pages" is about walking around a forested area collecting the eight pages without running into Slenderman, and I know there is at least one other game that has something to do with trying to find out what happened to a missing friend and investigating a ruined farm, but the details are... too detailed for me to recall.
Personally I like "Where's Waldo?"-style photos where you have to go looking to see where Slenderman is hiding, but I am tired of the ubiquitous forest ones.
