I agree he was over the top in The Silence of the Lambs. But he was spot-on in Hannibal.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Hannibal Lecter does NOT say things like "Okey dokey" and "Goody goody" in a ridiculous, almost camp tone. Hopkins' Hannibal is a caricature because no one had the cojones to tell him to knock it off, already.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember him saying anything like that in Hannibal.

Oh well, it apparently didn't bother me like it did in the first one. Whatever.

nayrt

I was okay with Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Lecter in the first movie, but the second one kind of crossed the line for me so it came off as more silly than scary/creepy. So many corny one-liners... /shakes head

When he's taking the piss, that's perfectly in character.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
If "Silence of the Lambs" was over the top, "Hannibal" was off the frigging charts in terms of over the top acting, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH I think Hopkins is largely responsible for the over the top quality in the movies, which is exaggerated from Hannibal's character in the books.

I used to like him, and then I watched Hannibal. Mads was so good in the role, I now can't see anyone else and Hopkins' over the top performance no longer feels right.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have this problem too.

Yeah, I'm glad now that I never liked the post-Silence movies, and Hopkins has very little screentime in SOTL anyway. Mads really made it his.

I still like Red Dragon, but that is in spite of Hopkins. I like everyone else in that movie. While Mads is my go-to Hannibal, Ralph Fiennes is still my go-to Dollarhide.

I still can't believe nobody involved in making Red Dragon noticed/cared how incredibly old and unthreatening the lighting made Hopkins look and how ridiculous that prison scene where he sort of lunges at Norton-Will looked as a result. But Ralph Fiennes went all out for that one, awesome as ever.

I have the opposite problem. But then again, I had more issues with the show than just Mads. But I won't get into that here, so.

I'm actually really interested in what your problems with the show are, but I guess we probably shouldn't clog up someone else's thread.

I prefer Mads in Hannibal, but still liked Hopkins' portrayal...

Haha, all the hype when it came out about how terrifying he was kinda scared me off seeing it in the theater, then I watched it on video later and laughed like hell. Still do. The weird Katherine Hepburn voice and the sucky sound get me every time. It's still a great movie, but Clarice's and Catherine's stories are the real draw for me.

Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal Lecter >>>>> Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter

You might enjoy Brian Cox's performance as "Lecktor" in Manhunter (1986) which is also comparatively subdued.

Me, I got a big kick out of Hopkins in Silence (haven't seen the sequels). But then I'm enough of a Vincent Price fan to enjoy some really good ham...

+1 to the Brian Cox recommendation
