I'm assuming it's because it's got some pretty OTT porny sex scenes, and you can go to brothels and whatnot, and the female characters are all fairly sexualized.

I think there's room to criticize the series, because it does come across as horny male fantasy sometimes, but I think anon's probably trolling.

Your targeting of teenage boys detracts credibility from your point (or your trolling attempt as the case may be). Or do you not think they're a big portion of the people sitting in classrooms?

So I'm not gonna lie, as much as I agree that women are overly sexualized in media that doesn't really do the same for men, and as irritated as I am that video games as a whole don't market to women, as a bisexual woman my boyfriend told me about those scenes knowing that would make me want to play the game. Even if it was just so I could laugh hysterically.

I kind of feel you because I'm also bisexual, and the buzz about the sex scenes piqued my interest, as well. But...they're just so bad. I'm thinking especially of the scene with Triss in the elven bathhouse, with her moaning as her clothes magically melt off. Ugh.

They're so off-putting to me that I'm not able to laugh at them, heh.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind sexy scenes if a) we got a bit more equal footing in treatment of men and women in games and b) they were any good. I still might play the Witcher games because I'm told they're similar to other games I enjoy (like Skyrim), but I'll probably be more irritated when I get to the scenes themselves.

Yup, I agree with you. And one of the common planks of the critiques of the Witcher games is that Geralt, while presented as attractive, isn't sexualized in the way that his prospective partners are. He's never shown below the waist, whereas the female characters are, and it's an interesting and obvious line to draw. Like, he's attractive so that the player will feel attractive; the women are attractive so that the player will desire them. And that's a common theme.

There are a lot of things about the Witcher games to recommend them, though. There's a fully realized world, and it's a gorgeous one, and there's lots of questing outside the main storyline, and there are some pretty challenging encounters. Also, even though the female characters are sexualized, they're competent and have their shit together. Outside of the sex scenes, they're decent.

That's the problem I have with games in general. Like, hi game makers! I play games too! Please market to me! I would like to be the attractive lady saving the world and being rewarded with men.

I really love open worlds and side quests. It's definitely on my list.

Hey, I'd love to be the attractive lady being rewarded with women, lol. Just multidimensional women who don't act like they're in a porn! :-p

I should warn it's not an open world in the way that Skyrim's is. It's a bit more limited, and you eventually reach a point where you have to continue the story, but you still have decent leeway.

I also admittedly haven't played the first game, because I heard it wasn't as good. Love the other two though.

Sounds right up my alley! I've got a few things on my list to check out so we will have to see.

In the first game at least you could plow a multitude of female characters and get hand-painted cards to show off your "conquests."

Like, literally hand-painted and scanned into the game.

I mean, I don't like the Witcher anyway because it's everything I hate about cRPGs, but that was pretty egregious.

Oh Jesus, I wasn't aware of that.

Maybe that's part of why I've been told not to play the first game.
