Jazz recs, anyone?

[personal profile] cakemage 2016-05-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is just a troll, but damned if it doesn't make me want to listen to some jazz out of spite. Problem is, I don't normally listen to jazz (I'm more of a classic rock kinda gal), so...anyone got any recs for me?

Oh jeez. Well, this predates jazz, but I will always vouch for Scott Joplin. I like Solace best, personally, but he has a lot of great ones. Be very careful which performances you get though, there's a HUGE variety in quality. 'The Complete Works of Scott Joplin' is reliable, though!

Cab Calloway is also awesome. 'Minnie the Moocher' or 'How Big Can You Get?' are great.

I also like Gershwin and Louie Prima.

I can't believe I forgot about Cab Calloway! My favorite of his is The Reefer Man. Solace is a nice tune, too!

Yeah, can't go wrong with Rhapsody in Blue! That's STILL the song that plays in my head as I'm running around frantically through public transit, courtesy of Fantasia 2000!

LOL yeah. While I'd heard it before then but Fantasia 2000 really brought it to my attention.

Tuba Skinny are fantastic, they have an old-timey New Orleans sound:

I don't know jazz at all, but when I visited New Orleans I enjoyed listening to their jazz station, WWOZ. You can listen online: http://www.wwoz.org/

I've been discovering the Dave Brubeck quartet, especially with Joe Morello's interesting and precise drum work on Take Five.

But for something to maximize pissiness from the OP, I'd say Fingathing for the hip hop fusion.

I like some modern jazz. Here's the Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins collaboration album (amusingly, Rollins is on only 3/5 of the tracks, which seems like a very Monk way to cut an album):

And here's jaxx-funk band Medeski Martin & Wood, playing with Nels Cline:
