In my experience, people who do that tend to have an unfortunate mix of towering ego and rampant insecurity. They are Obviously Right, so anyone who disagrees with them on any matter is Bad And Wrong, and must be corrected and mocked loudly and at length. If they retreat from the field, the filthy heathen might get away with their Bad And Wrong beliefs intact, and they can't cope with the thought of someone out there disagreeing with them in silence.
