The way it seems from my experience is that for most people, doing bad things is like falling off a cliff. Someone or something pushes them against the safety railing, and maybe the railing breaks.

For some people, doing bad things is like stepping over a line on the ground. They can step back and forth whenever they want, and may not notice or understand that one side is different from the other.

I think in both cases, there's something fundamentally wrong. It's just a question of when and how the problem started. Does that make any sense?

It makes sense, though in my case, I would amend "may not notice or understand" to add, "may not notice, understand, or CARE." My experience is that folks are well aware of the consequences of their behavior, most of the time, and will sometimes go to elaborate lengths to avoid them, showing they understand it's wrong. They just don't CARE.
