I don't think I'd go that far. He didn't deserve it. But he did bring it on himself, at least to a certain extent. He was the one most easily tempted by the ring, though for completely understandable reasons.

I don't think being tempted means bringing it on yourself, but ideas on moral judgement differs from Tolkien in that respect. To me I'll never be able to look at a character like that and be like "They had it coming".
