If dead chickens bother you maybe don't read the next comment

So I know it's super late and probably no-one will read this or care, but when I went out tonight to close up the chicken coop I counted hens and came up one short. I figured she was brooding some eggs in a corner somewhere, but I found her dead and already stiff just around the side of the coop...

I called the post office the week before my chicks came in to warn them they'd be getting a live delivery; the staff let me in before they opened to pick them up and wanted a peek in the chirping box. Chicks are shipped the day they hatch so they can live off stored yolk for a couple days, when I got them home, all fourteen were still alive. The next day the littlest one had died; she never even got a name. I gave away a few when they started laying, so I had eight, one wasted away and died and I had seven, including Jareth.

That was a few years ago. My first flock mostly lived to be fourteen; Scruffy, who lived to be sixteen, spent her last couple of months mostly curled up on the couch with my dog. Jareth, who died today, was maybe six or seven. At least she gets awesome company in heaven with the man she was (sort of) named for; she was a white crested blue polish hen.

That's not her in the picture, but she looked like the one in front. I'm going to miss her.

I'm sorry, anon. I'm sure she got to live a nice life and she's now in heaven chasing after delicious ghost worms.

But seriously, I'm very sorry for your loss.

:( I'm sorry for your loss.

Most people don't realize how much personality those little biddies can have. I always feed my mom's chooks some fresh grass whenever I arrive at her place, and I'm greeted by a range of reactions. Some of the little girls will happily run right up and start pecking at the fencing making their 'broooooook' noises at me while the bigger ones pace watchfully, all while attempting to intimidate me. ...But then, they snap up the grass greedily enough so I assume they are pleased with the offering lol.

Anyone who says "it's just a chicken" doesn't know what they're talking about.
