This just reminded me of my anime fandom days when Dub name vs. Sub name was downright violent in its intensity. Sub Elitism ran rampant, which was interesting because when I first got into Anime fandom you couldn't just google and stream any show you wanted. Most people had to get their fix through dubs that aired on TV.

I remember that quite well in Yu-Gi-Oh fandom.

It was awful. And confusing for young 10-15 year old me, before I discovered other fandoms, because I only had access to the dubs and frequently found myself reading fics where I had no idea what was happening.

Oh man, just trying to get a hold of fansubs! You'd pass around VHS tapes to share your love of anime. It was so different forever ago. None of this instantly being able to watch it.

I'm only 23 so I was way too young to have been doing that, and I was growing up during the 'everyone on the internet is a pedophile' scare, so my mother would have freaked if I tried. Things are really so much easier now, we take it for granted.

I'm not that much older, but I was influenced by much older friends. When I was 13, I was friends with 17-18 years olds who introduced me to anime and they were the ones who had all the VHS tapes they'd lend me.

Oh yes, the internet is a pedophile scare. I just learned to hide things on message boards way too easily and my mom had no idea how the internet worked. I was sooooo cautious about giving out my name and where I live.

Kids today are so dumb in that respect.

I was sheltered kid, so I didn't have that opportunity.

We need some middle ground between the 'everyone is a pedophile' of yesterday and the 'Hi my name is Andrea Smith I'm 15 and I live in Hoboken New Jersey' of today.

Completely agree! Part of it stems from facebook using your real name, which is why I keep my facebook separate from literally everything else I have. I use a pseudonym for instagram and several younger friends have commented on why I don't use my name. Seriously? At the time it was public and I didn't show my face so why would it matter?

Same with twitter, I keep it separate and don't use my real name.

I only use facebook log in for things that it would not horrify me if people found. Everything else gets a special email address. But fandom secrets is basically the only place where I don't just lurk, so that's pretty easy.

I'm the same way with Facebook. I use my real name there and on stuff directly connected to it. I think I also set up a Twitter with my real name but I literally never use it. Everything else online is separate from that. I might connect my various game/fan/etc. accounts with each other, but I'd never connect Facebook to any of them (no matter how often they ask me to). The Google account I primarily use is also not under my real name.
