Re: Just when I think I have fandoms figured out... (HUX, pairings, etc.)

I feel like I've seen that multiple times, I'll get into a fandom, ship two guys who are close in age and who it SEEMS like would be a popular ship, but then it turns out the main ship is one of them with an older father figure type. I'm not really into big age differences, so I don't get those pairings at all, but they're definitely popular for whatever reason.

Yeah, I've seen that a lot as well. In the "Criminal Minds" fandom I'm a fan of Morgan/Reid, and that one is indeed pretty popular...but Hotch/Reid is incredibly common, too, which kinda surprised me, for the very reasons you note. He's more like a father figure to the team in a lot of ways, so it seems odd to me to see him paired up with ANY of the younger team members.

Based off what I have seen of "NCIS", DiNozzo/McGee makes a lot more sense to me, too. I don't mind age gaps in and of themselves, necessarily, depending on the situation, but if the older character comes off more parental in nature, or is in a boss/supervisor position, it's a lot harder for me to ship them with a younger character, or a character who works for them, as a result.

I don't entirely rule those kinds of pairings out, 'cause I tend to be of the belief that a talented writer can make any pairing work, even if only for the length of a particular story. But for the most part, those aren't going to be my particular preferred pairings.

To each their own, though, of course :).

I shipped Morgan/Reid, too (haven't seen the past couple seasons of the show, though, and I know Morgan left which is kind of making me not want to catch up) and was definitely surprised at the popularity of Hotch/Reid.

Other examples I can think of are Scrubs (I liked JD/Turk, which I expected to be insanely popular, but JD/Cox was the biggest pairing for whatever reason), and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (I haven't gotten into the fandom, mainly because I don't ship anything, but from what I've heard, Jake/Holt is apparently the most popular, and it definitely reminds me of the JD/Cox approval-seeking dynamic).

I'm not really against age gaps and it definitely depends on the individual characters. I guess, like you mention, it's really more power imbalances that I usually don't like (boss/employee, teacher/student, surrogate parent/mentor type relationships, etc.) and a lot of times when there's a big age difference between characters there's also one of those types of dynamics.

I don't entirely rule those kinds of pairings out, 'cause I tend to be of the belief that a talented writer can make any pairing work, even if only for the length of a particular story. But for the most part, those aren't going to be my particular preferred pairings.

Yep, same. I won't entirely rule them out, and it really depends on the particular characters and their dynamic (I really liked Peter/Neal from White Collar, for example) but in general, it's not really my type of pairing.

I love Peter and Neal together, but I could never ship them. Peter's wife is just so great, I can't get my head around the guys together while she's there (and I'd never be able to just wish her away in my head or kill her off or something...I really like her!).
