Re: Just when I think I have fandoms figured out... (HUX, pairings, etc.)

There was a thread here not too long ago where they were talking about the Kylo/Hux ship, and apparently there are theories going around that a lot of people left Stormpilot for Kylux because of excessive fandom policing. People preferred guilt-free kinky porn, so they left.

speaking of which, have you read these metas:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/6673552/chapters/15261553

http://archiveofourown.org/works/6652984/chapters/15217063

I could really understand what the author was saying and felt it all made a lot of sense. But the comments you'd think she's the worst entitled pasty white racist person in the world. It's a little scary, IMO. The rage, I mean. I don't think people's ships should be above critique, and sometimes fandom can be racist, but the idea that you can dictate what people ship (and if they don't they're racist) is a little creepy to me. Because it doesn't seem to actually work, just scares off the newcomers who think it's one of "those" fandoms.

I saw those! From where I'm sitting, I think they make some valid points. I know, because I've had something like that happen to me - once I was talking about an asexual fic idea with somebody who was asexual, and they didn't like one of my plot points. I agreed with them that it was unhealthy and born of lack of understanding (and the character was meant to be kind of broken), but I thought it was realistic. They told me I have a responsibility towards asexuals encountering the story.
In the end, we did come to an agreement, but later I found that my muse had died, and I never ended up writing the story.

If even a fraction of what these posts bring up is true, I'm not surprised kylux is on the rise and stormpilot isn't.

Yeah I mean I get that it's complicated. Finally some representation for a black hero in a huge film, and it would be amazing to see him written in a positive way, in fandom too. It must be SO frustrating to deal with the lack of that at times.

But on the other hand...if it's not fun, people aren't going to want to play. Especially younger, less confident fans (the future of fandom). I wish fandom was better about offering and accepting criticism without killing off the fandom. (But I know i don't appreciated unsolicited advice, that's for sure.) And I wish it could just be fun without people being on a rage bender, the way some fans seem to so enjoy. I don't think it's all "SJW" (hate that term) stuff, but it is awful to see a fandom crash and burn from toxic rage and shit.

I'm pretty touchy about asexual representation; I've gotten to the point where I just won't read it unless I completely trust an author (and I'm talking about pro published work here; I kind of don't read ace people in fanfic at all). So I understand the frustration of your fan, but also of you, w/ losing motivation to write it at all.

I really don't want to see Kylux be the juggernaut just because it's allowed to be "problematic" and other ships aren't. :( But on the other hand, fandom does what it wants, and it's not actually a contest, and I can't fix or change anything, just do my own thing.

I get the sensitivity, but at the same time, I think as long as the issue is treated with respect... what can I do, I like angst and drama, you know? I'm not going to write them all being perfectly-balanced fluffy bunnies (in this specific case, the fic was going to end with both asexuals rejoicing at having found each other and living a happy sexless life together, it's just that on the way there were some issues to overcome).

I'm not even invested in the fandom, but Stormpilot did seem really cute to me, and I might have been tempted to check it out, but it sounds like nobody's writing the type of stuff I'd be interested in. And who needs the drama...

That sounds cool and awesome. I got pretty burned trying to read "asexual" Sherlock fic that was all about sex for some reason?? Like asexuality was a kink, having sex without wanting it??????? It really pissed me off, so I just avoid it now so I can keep my blood pressure in a better place.

I know my limits on certain things. Not everything, though, if I'm honest.

OK, nice chatting with you!

I totally agree about the reputation of drama; if the fandom is going to be active, happy, and varied, it's the worst possible way to welcome newcomers...

Ugh, yeah, I've seen those fics where the asexuality is more about the "having sex you don't want" kink or something. I can imagine it gets very trying :(

But avoiding the stuff that stresses you out is probably best. I mean we're all here to have fun, at the end of the day. And it's hard to know your limits sometimes unless you encounter them, and that's not always fun.
