Re: Just when I think I have fandoms figured out... (HUX, pairings, etc.)
And because, if you like certain kinds of BDSM or dubcon-y dynamics, they work better with someone in an inappropriate position of power as the dominant partner. (In fact, while they're close in age, the fanon personality pasted onto Hux is the same kind of perfect alpha male uber-dom thing. I blame his lack of personality combined with his fetishwear costuming.) It's what makes that wretched 50 Shades popular too: the fantasy of someone who can dish it out forever and never require anything in return. It's the kink flavor of the "perfect boyfriend" prop who follows around the woobie in intense woobie fic. Again, someone with zero needs of their own who exists to cater to a bottomless pit of neediness.
I shipped McGee/Dinozzo too (and Gibbs/Fornell), but the popular fic in that fandom should not come as a surprise to anyone: it's all reader self inserts being dommed by Gibbs. Abby/Gibbs was like that too. Even Director Shepard/Gibbs tended to be like that. People just cream themselves over authority figures. It's an incredibly common kink. It sounds like it's one you don't share, which is fine, but this air of wide-eyed incredulity is irritating yet humorous enough for me to comment even at this late date.
(And, yes, Stormpilot scares people away because it has asshole "fans" who police everything and because the 90% of the fic that sucks sounds like someone's delivering a PSA. The 90% of Kylux that sucks sounds like somebody wrote it one-handed and is getting off hard, even if their prose is atrocious and nothing makes sense. Enthusiasm wins over ideology when it comes to hobbies that are supposed to be fun. Though I too still ship Stormpilot and not Kylux.)
ETA: Oh, hah, and I see you linked to my meta later. I was kind of asking for it with the tone of my writing, honestly, so all of those people on a rage bender do not surprise me, but they were nearly as bad at people who were sweet and scared and acting completely in good faith and trying not to fuck up. Not cool. Very not cool.
