Aule used to annoy me as much as Morgoth and Sauron, but after being in the Hobbit fandom, I find him more interesting (too bad the Hobbit fandom never actually uses him or actually studies how their unique creation affects them or how he feels about them re: elves/men).

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Why did he annoy you? I can't think of anything annoying he did except make an iffy decision which turned out really well.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, my opinions have changed somewhat and it's been awhile but I think part of it was the people associated with him (Sauron, Saruman, Noldor, Feanor - people who made questionable choices). He seems gung-ho about creating stuff but doesn't do enough about consequences and by the point of Saruman, I felt like he should know better. It's Turin but on a much smaller scale. Also, I didn't like how dismissive he was of Yavanna's importance re: the dwarves. He basically created a situation for ongoing conflict for his own selfish needs and didn't seem contrite about it. He just seemed like a dick to me. A lot of the stuff that overlaps him and Melkor is stuff that bugs me.

The characters are interesting together, but I refuse to believe that Sauron (or anyone from the Tolkienverse) would ever wear that ridiculous hipster hairstyle.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's not "hipster." It's traditional Russian Cossack/Polish Samaritan: http://perplexingly.tumblr.com/post/125880606885/aule-teaching-sauron-smithing

Pls learn about a few other cultures' histories than that of north-western europe, c'mon. Not so difficult to figure out.

(And if you want to go "but Middle Earth is western european influenced," Aule isn't a Middle-Earth-only deity, a ton of dwarves live in places far east and north of Middle-Earth.)

It's Aulë who is specified as Cossack/Polish, I don't think the post specifies anything about Sauron, and that undercut hairstyle is painfully common right now.

I object to this generic design in general. I know it is conceivable, even likely, that the Valar took elvish forms just to enable normal interactions with the Children of Iluvatar but visually speaking I much prefer the fun, outlandish, borderline non-human designs other artists go for.

I am very interested in Sauron's relationship with Aule. I see it as a very paternal/mentor relationship, so it is very much a NOTP for me. But I like exploring what it was like and what went wrong that led to Sauron joining Melkor.

I appreciate your labeling the fanart source, OP! ^_^ Thanks!

I always fucking loved Aule. He's honestly the most "human" Vala - not a petty immature sociopath like Melkor, but pretty short-sighted and impatient. Also apparently kinda naive given that both Sauron and Saruman seemed like the best students ever under him but wound up being terrible people who went evil.

I would love to read a fanfic about Melkor poisoning Sauron against Aule as part of his luring-Sauron-over-to-his-side thing and Sauron breaking his poor teacher's heart though. Any recs, by any chance?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
He also worked with Feanor and probably thought he was the best ever too. Great judge of character, that Aule.

His relationship with Yavanna was fascinating too. Most interesting Vala couple no doubt.

which one is which?

::failing to figure out who's Sauron [same one with the rings or different?] and who's the other::

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
The younger/smaller/beardless one is Sauron.

He's the same one with the rings. Sauron started out as a Maia (kind of a lesser angel) named Mairon who was a student of Aule, the Vala of craftmanship (a Vala is a kind of higher angel/demi-god).

"Sauron" is actually just a derogatory nickname the elves gave him after he went evil and abandoned Aule and the rest of the Maiar and Valar.

(Also, calling him "Sauron" instead of "Mairon" is approximately as sophisticated and dignified as calling Hitler "Shitler" but that's neither here nor there and elves are goofy weirdos like that.)

Every time someone (someone who isn't fucking philstar that is) talks about the non-LOTR/Hobbit stuff Tolkien wrote about Middle Earth, the more I want to read all of it, even though I know I probably couldn't get through it.

I love this comment.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Come on, no need to slag on philstar, it's their main fandom. Their Tolkien OTP is my NOTP but I can sidestep those posts.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like their OTP, I just can't stand their personality. They manage to make me want to hate everything they like because they are so insufferable about everything (in other fandoms as well).

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Can't help that, I guess. We've been in a disagreement or two as well, but they've been having such a hard time for so long...
