The original anime is very different from Crystal, which follows the manga directly. I didn't watch Crystal so I can't personally compare them, but the original anime has pretty good writing and held up well for me as an adult. I do know from general hearsay that the other scouts, as well as the villains, are fleshed out a lot more in the original anime. But Usagi is also said to be whinier in it, so if she annoys you in Crystal she'll probably annoy you more in the first anime.

Hmm, see, if everybody else is fleshed out, I may still prefer that one. Because here, it feels like the only character who gets any development at all is Usagi, and she's... ugh. All she does is cry and say "Mamo-chan" a lot. Nobody else is more than a cardboard cutout.

ETA: I also don't get, what kind of wish-fulfillment is she supposed to provide? At that age, I wanted to imagine myself strong and badass, not whiny and rescued all the time.
...I still like to imagine myself strong and badass, tbh

I'm pretty sure the manga author used Usagi as a self-insert and Mamoru was written to be her ideal man lol. Hey, it made her a lot of money!

Makoto/Jupiter is my favorite character, but I really identified with Usagi when I was a little kid because I was kind of a crybaby and got bad grades. Maybe I was watching the wrong cartoons, but I remember female characters being smart, sassy, and super cool. I thought they were awesome, but I didn't relate to them on the same level as Usagi, who seemed more ordinary and realistic (magical powers aside). I liked watching her grow and get better at fighting evil. For all her faults (and there are lots) I thought she was genuinely kind and tried to be friends with people who weren't always nice to her. I wanted to be like her in that respect. Oh, and she was a magical space princess with a pretty transformation sequence and pretty attacks.
