...somebody needs to make a "plot episodes list" for the original, sounds like.

See, if she improves at some point, I can suck it up - I don't mind character development. But it's been 12 episodes, and she's STILL useless, even though plot is happening. And it's kind of unrealistic to me that none of the other Scouts are bothered by this at all.

As far as I remember, Rei was bothered by her being whiny. It's a sore point between Mars and Moon in the beginning, I think. It's been ages, but she's fairly whiny for a lot longer in the original but it's an over the top 90s anime.

If I remember correctly she becomes a lot more competent after the 1st season. But being a little bit of a crybaby is just in her personality.

I really think that, more than her personality being a bit of a crybaby, it bothers me here because I can just imagine if some friends and I were in the middle of fighting evil and one of us was constantly breaking down in tears and not fighting, at the very least we'd exchange some exasperated looks.
And since in Crystal none of the other Scouts have much personality to speak of, it doesn't leave me anybody to root for.

I actually think that's one thing that turned me off of watching "Crystal". Yes, Usagi is a crybaby in the '90's series, but she actually gets OFF the "not fighting" kick pretty quickly. And the other senshi are a lot more fleshed-out. If I hadn't watched the '90's series, I wouldn't be invested in them much at all.

I know they changed Rei (Mars)'s personality for the '90's anime (making her have a temper, rather than cool and collected), but that really worked for me. Ami the shy, brainy one, Rei the hothead, Makoto the tough girl with a hidden girly side, Minako who one on hand is boy crazy, but a great fighter on the other, and Luna the cat trying to herd.. girls? XD

Crystal just went through everything so fast, it almost requires having seen the '90's series or read the manga to really get the characters.

If you do check out the '90's series and decide on a condensed version, I'd skip the first part of the second season (Sailormoon R). It's an anime-only filler arc with aliens (yes, aliens) named Ail and Ann. No, I'm not kidding. Only go there for laughs.

Her maturity definitely improves in the second season because of the decision she makes at the end of the first season.
