I doubt it. We're usually on the same page and there isn't much that would offend her that wouldn't also offend me, that I know of.

By "not a fan" I mean that I never liked the idea that we the general public should go out of our way to elevate soldiers to hero status... WWII maybe sure, but a lot of people not worthy of hero worship eagerly join the military for personal glory nowadays and I guess I don't like stroking their egos? Or, there has been the occasional soldier who expressed discomfort with that thing where when someone says "I served in ___", the next words spoken by anyone are "Thank you for your service". It feels about as forced and insincere as going to the doctor with a broken wrist and when they greet you with the standard "How are you today?" you say "Fine".

I like my friend as a person, not because of a job she used to have. So I've never thanked her or anything,and I don't think she expects me to. And I just don't know why I keep feeling awkward.

Disclaimer that IDK about thanking more recent vets. However, Vietnam veterans were ignored or outright hated right after the war ended. Showing some kind of gratitude or appreciation always struck me as a way of trying to make up for that.

Yeah that makes sense. I don't think you need to feel awkward - I doubt she expects you to say anything in particular to her about it! (I had a good friend for a while who was ex-army, and he talked about it sometimes, but I never said anything like "thank you for your service" - I was more interested in his experiences and being there as a friend than platitudes anyway. and I'm pretty sure he has PTSD out the wazoo :/ )
