(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)By "not a fan" I mean that I never liked the idea that we the general public should go out of our way to elevate soldiers to hero status... WWII maybe sure, but a lot of people not worthy of hero worship eagerly join the military for personal glory nowadays and I guess I don't like stroking their egos? Or, there has been the occasional soldier who expressed discomfort with that thing where when someone says "I served in ___", the next words spoken by anyone are "Thank you for your service". It feels about as forced and insincere as going to the doctor with a broken wrist and when they greet you with the standard "How are you today?" you say "Fine".
I like my friend as a person, not because of a job she used to have. So I've never thanked her or anything,and I don't think she expects me to. And I just don't know why I keep feeling awkward.
