(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 03:25 am (UTC)(link)I don't think that's a good generalization to make about fandom because it depends on what fandom you're in. My guess is your fandom participation in particular is coloring your view of just how dominant slash is.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 04:55 am (UTC)(link)No, AO3 statistics, as well as your basic run of the mill observation, are what is shaping my view of how dominant slash is.
49.9% of the fics on AO3 are slash.
24.7% of the fics on AO3 are het.
Slash is literally twice> as popular as het. A lead which is made even more dramatic when you factor in that there are way, waaaaaaaayyyy more het pairings in canon. The fact is, fans leap over canonical het pairings in order to ship slash pairings a huge amount of the time.
That doesn't really bother me. There are several slash pairings I adore, including the one that has been my main OTP for several years now. I like slash. And of course I wish there were more LGBT relationships depicted in the media. Because just as it's plain that fans will leap over het pairings in order to ship slash ones, the people who write the mainstream media we all consume have a tendency of leaping over possible slash pairings in order to go with het ones.
But to suggest that fandom, when averaged out as a general whole, is not wearing goggles that are liberally tinted with slashiness is just...a really, really weird denial of reality.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 10:16 am (UTC)(link)There are plenty fandoms where more than twice the number of fics is het.
