Re: Feelings and Confessions
(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 08:01 am (UTC)(link)You said: I'd have foiled for disability years ago if I'd actually trust shrinks with my sanity.
Obviously the application process is different for everyone, and I don't want to give bad advice or pain an inaccurate picture of it. But personally, I didn't really have a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist when I applied for disability. IIRC I went to my GP (who I'd only had as my GP for a couple of months at that point), and she referred me to a psychiatrist, and I had ONE hour-long session with the psychiatrist, where she asked me questions and wrote up a file on me. But ultimately, she was pretty dismissive of almost everything I told her (she seemed to think I was young, able-bodied, and neither suicidal nor hysterical, so I couldn't actually be that mentally ill). Then I got an advocate, and the advocate helped me tremendously with the rest. In the end, the only thing I got from the psychiatrist which actually went into my application package was an official diagnosis, and all it was was Generalized Anxiety Disorder (not particularly adequate or accurate, in my opinion, but whatever).
