9. Wrong! V for Vendetta was a comic series before it was a movie. Keep your dystopias straight, will you? Yes there are some similar elements, but the whole 'Big Brother' government phenomenon (lolol 1984 reference) is a common theme in many dystopian stories. 1984, Equlibrium, The Handmaid's Tale, V for Vendetta, etc.

^^ I loved the movie, but of course, I'm a rather huge dystopian fan overall. Maybe it wasn't 'life-changing', but I thought it stayed true to the genre, rahter than being a 'lame remake' as you put it.

The comics were way better though. I suggest you try them if you didn't like the movie.

It's great when people confuse 1984 with every other dystopia ever written. Other people have written other things. I mean, fuck, Brave New World came out nearly twenty years before 1984.

Agreed. I like 1984 but Orwell didn't invent the idea.

Exactly!

*mutters under breath*

Brave New World came out nearly twenty years before 1984.

Kallocain (by Karin Boye) was also written years before 1984, though it's a lot less well-known of course.

There's a comic series I really need to find. Geeky literature-spouting criminal mastermind blowing things up in a Guy Fawkes mask. EPIIIIIC

I'd even argue that a Big Brother-esque government control is a vital element in dystopiae - I mean, it wouldn't be a dystopia if people weren't being forced to do things they didn't like. Government-by-general-consent seems to me more utopic than dystopic.
