:/ Everything after he went into the war seemed like a lot of cheap attempts to get an emotional reaction from the audience, and the ending was nothing more than a lot of "'sad' but convieniently coincidental tragedies."

I think the hype just worked the movie up to a point where I was expecting MORE. I mean, the whole first part was amazing, I'll give it that, but I felt like the rest of it took a sharp, downward slope.

It's a shame, too, because I REALLY wanted to like the movie.

Um wow, are you me? That's exactly how I felt about the movie, unmet expectations and all. The first third of it was exquisite, ey? I think the director's has a bit too much of a deliberate eye for the aesthetic of his film to really get across the honesty needed for the war bits.

I'm guessing you haven't read the book - the movie is actually extremely close to the book, but I wonder if you read the book, maybe it'll give you a different perspective on the movie. The book is absolutely fabulous - and I'm a huge reader, so I don't say that about just any book.

I fully respect your opinion, but I think it's a shame you didn't like it. I understand about being hyped up for something, though. That always sucks.

No, I haven't read the book, but I do LOVE to read, and I was curious about it. I might have to check it out to see if it changes my persepctive on things. :)
