Re: What's something weird that you dislike people for?

People who tell me I'm 'lucky' when I am no luckier than they are. I dunno if that's weird or not, but it's been ticking me off of late.

Why would they call you lucky and for what?

One example: I bought a couch from a local store. It cost a lot, but it was very comfortable and doesn't hurt my back when I lie down, which is important to me. A co-worker said I was lucky to be able to afford it.

No. I just saved for six months.

Another example: I went to Peru. The same co-worker said I was lucky.

Again. I saved for a year and a half for that trip. I didn't see movies. I didn't eat out unless I had a gift card. I rode my bike to the grocery store. It didn't just happen.

That same co-worker earns more than I do.

Eh... they might have more necessary expenses than you that doesn't allow them to save money. Spouse, children, higher rent, medical bills, whatnot. I'm not saying you're lucky, because it sounds like you worked for and earned those things and that's admirable, but the coworker might mean the situation.

Then again if you told me they're the type that eats out all the time and spends tons on entertainment then complains about having no money, I'd not be surprised either.

We have healthcare, he'll travel an hour and a half to take his kid to see an Imax movie, and he's been known to bring coffee to an office THAT HAS A FULLY BREWED COFFEE POT EVERY MORNING. WE EVEN HAVE OUR DESIGNATED COFFEE-BREWER!!!

We're both lucky to live in the free world where we can make our own decisions. I just happen to make different ones.

Fair enough, might be he's bad with money, but some people can save for 6 months and really not be able to save for Peru or an expensive couch. I know I couldn't (like I can save, but not those amount in that amount of time). Sure life choices matter, but not everything is a clear choice, and people end up in a place they aren't really happy with but can't get out.

I totally agree with this, but it sounds like someone who is financially much better off than iceyred telling her she's lucky which is just stupid.

Some people, sure. But not this guy. We have the same job, but he's got seniority.

I'm not denying the privilege that comes from living in a first world country and being gainfully employed, but he's as lucky as I am there.

If he has the same job and seniority, I agree with you he's just shit with money (and life choices).

People are always like that about money. My aunt made a passive aggressive comment about how "lucky" my partner and I were that we got to go to France, a place she'd love to go. She's been such a cow about this that I wasn't at all nice about responding. I pointed out that it cost us $X, we saved up the money and if she hadn't bought all the useless yet expensive tat decorating her apartment, she could've gone, too. That shut her up.

I remember sitting out in gym class a lot through middle and high school because my joints are easily injured and people who hated gym would tell me I was lucky to not have to do it.
