Sam's apology after Rhodey was shot down showed how much good that gesture would have done in such a situation. And to be honest, I don't see how you can apologize for something like that. It is what it is, and the other person will decide whether they will forgive you, but there's nothing to say.

But a decent person doesn't apologize on the condition that someone will accept the apology ... they apologize because it shows compassion and empathy for the person who is suffering. And if they're motivated by compassion, they don't flounce because the apology isn't accepted.

I get that Bucky is messed up, so maybe he's not capable of that. I *am* saying that it would have been the decent thing to do.

I had 2 different points in that comment, though. The first was the Sam comparison, to show that an apology would have been useless. The second was that I really believe sometimes the situation is so terrible and fucked up that you can't even apologize to show compassion. Your compassion means nothing at that point, it would be less than empty and would only serve to make you feel better, not the other person. When it's that bad you can only wait for the other party to process and respond, and then react to that as best as you can.

No. "I've done something so bad, it's apologizing is worthless!" It's not up to you whether your apology is worthless. It's up to the person who receives it.

I believe in taking responsibility, but I don't equate that to a verbal apology for every situation, so I guess I don't agree.
