I've been having trouble finding any comedians at all that I like these last few years.

I have to confess I'm in a similar boat. I usually don't care for the stand up acts of female comedians even though I like comedic actresses.

However! I find Amy Schumer's stand up legit hilarious. I haven't seen her movie, and I am not overly hyped about IAS... but the first place I encountered her was as a stand up comedian and I was like, "This girl is going places."

Yeah, I've never found a female comedian that seemed funny to me, AND I've been attacked daring to say so on the internet, so I can only assume that people feel obligated to like female comedians regardless of entertainment value, and thus they don't have to try very hard.

I like some but I don't like a huge number of comedians in the first place, and some I only like a few skits of their work.

I'm not a fan of stand-up in general. There are maybe a couple I like, but mostly it just isn't my thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, if those folks don't appeal to you, then they don't appeal to you. Humor is subjective.

I don't mind humor with sexual aspects, but that doesn't mean I'll like a comedian for the reason that they talk about sex.

I remember Ellen DeGeneres' stand-up being pretty clean (no 100% guarantee, though). I don't think she's done stand-up in years, but you might be able find some of her old shows online somewhere.

Hm. I used to love stand-up when I was a kid, but I got out of it, and I don't know the newer people other than Leslie Jones. I think she does lean on the oversexed middle-aged woman shtick really hard.

You're right that there tends to be a lot of sexual stuff in female stand-up. It's been that way for a while, and not everyone can pull it off without looking tacky.

I do like a good stand-up comedienne, though.

Watch some old Ellen Degeneres stuff and see if that appeals to you? I think Paula Poundstone used to do a lot of non-sexual humor too.

Back in the day, I thought Rita Rudner was funny, but then, I had a crush on her. I think my mom liked Carol Liefer; she's OK. Of course, way back when, Carol Burnett was very good. It's a good form.

Sharing a gender with a comedian does not mean you will share a point of view.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
How about some Amy Poehler, Gilda Radner, Kathy Griffin, Ellen DeGeneres, Roseanne Barr, Phyllis Diller, Amy Schumer, Whoopi Goldberg (before she became lame because "The View" made her boring and unfunny lately) or Margaret Cho?

I know I'm going to get a lot of heat for saying this (because she's well hated and for good reason), but Joan Rivers is hilarious no matter what!

Check them out!

Since we're talking about female comedians, I love Wanda Sykes. I have no idea if she'd work for OP.

I'm going to watch everyone's suggestions. The ones I watched on netflix were the ones that I found by using the related videos feature.

Have you tried Tig Notaro? http://tignation.com/home/

She is the deadest of the deadpan. Puts me to mind of Steven Wright. I'm also fond of Jessica Williams, Janeane Garofalo, and Chelsea Peretti. eta: Janeane came out as asexual, btw. Did a great riff on it in one of her sets.

Maybe you just don't like stand-up much?

I like standup in small doses, especially on YouTube. But those doses are often VERY small when the comedy is mostly based on sex and shock value. It does seem like a lot of female comedians seem to rely on this a lot? IDK.

Oh, Paula Poundstone is kinda funny. :-) I've only found a couple of YT clips that don't repeat jokes, though.

It's ok anon. The only stand-up comedian I like is George Carlin, and he's definitely not a woman. Guess that makes me a sexist. ~shrug~

I really like Margaret Cho, Wanda Sykes, and Erin Foley. I feel like there are a couple others but I'm totally blanking on who they are at the moment.

I always wonder if the priority for attractiveness skews the quality of female comedians. Yes, there are successful ones who aren't that attractive, but it probably helps if you are.
