They throw out those references and YOU KNOW they don't even know what they are talking about. They just vaguely know stuff nerd culture likes and make some generalized unfunny remark, cue canned laughter.

They have a studio audience. It isn't canned.

I've never once gotten the impression that they don't know their stuff. They put a lot of effort into tiny details like the whiteboard in the living room, so why wouldn't they know their stuff?

You do know every show with a studio audience has a sign that tells people when to laugh right?

Of course. But they don't HAVE to, and they don't have to be raucous. "Canned laughter" refers to laugh tracks added in artificially though, so even a coached audience wouldn't be canned.
