I thought it was obvious that it was casual and not like a best-friend thing. A best friend is someone you know and talk to often not someone you text a few times a year. Also, I never initiated any texts or calls, I just sent brief replies.

I've made it clear to my family. They're giving me a difficult time about it, but they'll get over it.

Well... in the future you'll know not to make that mistake. Unfortunately it's never obvious to anyone what intentions are if they're placing an extremely high value on interpersonal interactions.

I know it sounds pretty harsh, but if this person literally doesn't have any other friends that she considers to be closer than you then her definition of "best friend" is a person you text a couple of times per year. However, that doesn't mean you owe her your time or resources just because she believes you do. ...Especially since she doesn't seem capable of respecting your personal wishes.

I've definitely learned not to make assumptions like this anymore. I'll be relieved when this fiasco ends.
