Re: Random Stuff In Your Life / Questions / TMI

I just came home after being with my grandmother all day today. This morning she woke up and apparently didn't remember anything about the past couple of days. According to my sister, who lives with her, she spent over an hour being upset and crying before she calmed down. My sister had to go to work, so she asked me if I could keep her couple for the rest of the day, so that's what I did.

She seemed fine while I was there, but her memory has been spotty for years and if this incident is any indication it's just going down even more from here.

I just feel bad for my sister who has to deal with it on a daily basis :/

People whose memories are getting "spotty" often try and cover it up because they're embarrassed or don't want to sound nuts. It's time to take your grandmother to the doctor to have a full work up done.

She has been quite recently. My father even went with her to make sure someone could actually remember it if there was everything. My grandmother thinks it went 'perfectly well' as that was the result of some other tests (like for cancer), for mental health things the results weren't as good, but not full on dementia or anything yet.

She talked about having to go to the doctor sometime this week due to the incident this morning, and my sister would then be accompanying her. Hopefully she actually goes through with it willingly. If not, I hope my father can push her into doing it (as mean as that sounds). She's definitely at a denial stage when it comes to the extent of her issues though.

I've been there and it is so sad. My step grandma has been really upset and depressed lately. I can't imagine the horror of being in that stage where you know you have dementia (which she definitely does, way farther along at this point than your gma if that is indeed the direction she's going in) but simultaneously feel yourself slipping.

*hugs if wanted*

It's not mean. People who have Alzheimers or memory issues are often resistant to getting help, but at the same time, they're not in a good position to judge just how healthy they are. Seeing a doctor for a full evaluation helps establish a baseline so you guys will know for sure if it's dementia and not, say, a stroke or a medication issue, and if so, how far along it's developed.
