On the contrary, the fact that they mean "you're going to hell" has made them worse. There's no distinction anymore between the many different forms of racism/sexism/homophobia; they're all equally damning. We used to be taught that everyone is insensitive sometimes, and the important thing is that we apologize for it and correct our behavior. Now any slightly *ist thing you say even by accident makes you deserving of death. I've internalized the belief in that after being told it so often. When people talk about things that are *ist and I remember having done them before, I reconsider whether continuing to live is worth it.
