MTE....'what would happen if this character was Asian and lived on the moon in an underground coffee shop?' ...... and as cool as that sounds, that's not remotely close to where the story takes place

An underground moon coffee shop would be an excellent setting for an original SF novel, though.

This was actually one of my big gripes with Wicked (especially the book). He changed so much about Oz in order to turn it grim n'gritty that it didn't even say anything about the story, anymore. It wasn't a retelling from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective.
It was a retelling if the Wicked Witch of the West lived in a different world governed by different rules where different things happened. Gee.
