Or they were raised in an environment where that is what forgiveness meant. Why can't you accept that and quit acting as if people are being willfully stupid because they were raised in toxic-as-fuck environments where words have entirely different meanings than they do in Sane People Land?

Why are they using the wrong definition of forgiveness when they know it's wrong?

Now if they were griping about how their toxic environments led them to wrongly believe that forgiveness also meant "pretend their abuser did nothing wrong, remain friends with/in contact with their abuser, minimizing their abuser's offenses, and not protest when their abuser did it again" and how shitty TV shows act as if that is in fact the definition of forgiveness and it's a good thing, I would get it. But that's not how people are using it.

Because those kinds of lessons and patterns are very, very difficult to unlearn. Even if you know that definition is wrong, that is still the association you were taught with the word from a very young age. You can't just turn that shit off like a switch.
