So is it barbaric and borderline illegal when I take my cat out for a walk on her leash and harness?

Also I doubt they really offer more safety.

Keeps my cat safe, why wouldn't it keep a kid safe?

Well... people don't do that with cats where I live. It's against their natural behavior and if it looks like the cat is pulling on it a lot you might even get in trouble for animal abuse. But that's not the issue. Children have human rights and stuff like bring preemptively restrained against your will is in conflict with them. I say borderline because in some cases it *can* be helpful ore more safe.

It's against their natural behavior

You would be surprised, they get used to wearing a harness very quickly and don't mind putting it on, since it means they get to go on their walk :)

if it looks like the cat is pulling on it a lot \

I haven't really seen this myself. Leashed cat behavior (at least with my cats) is different from leashed dog behavior. Cats are much more leisurely and don't seem to have the impression that if they pull hard enough, they can drag you along wherever they like, LOL. If really want to go somewhere you don't want them to go, you don't need to pull or yank them. Just begin inching your way down the lead, scoop them up, and carry them off somewhere else and they'll forget about their earlier goal.

By that logic wouldn't holding your child be "preemptively restraining them against their will"?
