Funnily enough, I remember being really irritated as a kid that there wasn't enough romance in the books. I wanted cute shenanigans!

Yeah, I don't think there is an egregious amount of romance in them, and I am very quick to get annoyed by romantic subplots. Yeah the teens had crushes on each other, but I wouldn't say it was holding the plot together
