I don't know. But some people on the forum seemed utterly shocked an heartbroken that he didn't sound British.

Allow me to quote a forum member over a month after Tracy said flat out he sounded like a New Yorker:
Just as Mordecai wants people to think he isn't just some uneducated rube from New York. He demands respect and I really don't think Mordecai is the kind of guy that thinks people can respect a thick, possibly goofy sounding New York accent (No offense, New Yorkers of the forums!) in St. Louis. So he uses proper grammar, maybe makes himself sound a little less New York, a little bit more refined...

Offense was taken, but I didn't say anything.

.....okay, as a New Yorker (whose family is also from New York and had not thick but still present New York accents) who MOVED TO THE ST. LOUIS AREA, I can tell you This Is Complete Bullshit.

Yes and also yes. I wish I had the balls to tell the forum members who were (and are) still bitching about it to go fuck themselves. But I only comment once every other month and these are people who are really active on the forum.

...god what the FUCK, seriously! Why would only the "uneducated" have accents, and so what if they did? Has this cuntrag even BEEN to New York or St. Louis? It's not like St. Louis is any more refined than NYC. What the living hell?

I don't know. It started in the "Character Voices (the sequel)" thread, and the comment I just quoted was from the thread on last month's digital tutorial, "Digital Kvetching (mini-painting tutorial)". There are a couple of forum regulars who seem to have this idiotic issue.

Re: 36

I feel a very strong attachment to both cities, and this has royally pissed me off. I'm not even all that familiar with the character in question, but just... Okay. Why is this so-called "British" accent (I'm sure they mean English) somehow SOOPAR DOOPAR AMAZING and the sign of a SOOPAR SMRT PERSON and a "New York accent" (again, she probably means Brooklyn) automatically indicative of uncouth slum trash? WHY WOULD PEOPLE IN ST. LOUIS GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT SOMEONE'S ACCENT? The most you'd likely get is "whoa, English/Brooklyn accent! Weird/neat" and then you'd carry on with business as usual. It's not an Issue. It should not be an Issue.

Hell, Mordecai probably WOULD have a Brooklyn accent. That's the general area us Jews are from. But I always figured that a) it sounded tough and b) people took him seriously because there's some DAMN SERIOUS mob activity going on in that neighborhood.
I'm not sure why people would accept a London or Northern England (which are what they probably mean by "British") accent as necessarily more respectable, considering their professions. It might make them think he was a nancy, if you think about it.

What if he had a COCKNEY accent? That's "British." Would that still be considered Upper Class And Refined enough for her?

What a dumb fucking whore.
