Speaking of Star Wars, apparently Rogue One reshoots are somewhat large in order to fit the 'tone' of SW movies as a whole, with lightheartedness and jokes.

And I am kind of pissed.

SW is a big, diverse galaxy, if you're just going to make everything "super witty upbeat space romp" - why bother having anthologies besides money. If you're not going to get creative, why should I watch it instead of just waiting for Episode 8?

I love Star Wars, and while I can't say I was even looking forward to RO - the story itself just doesn't interest me, I'm tired of 'twenty minutes before the first movie' - I was excited to see it be a little different. But we can only wait and see.

I heard about that. I don't mind something different but I also don't get the fervor over the universe getting smaller. I'm in it for the characters I know so I'm happy to see the people they're connected to. If there are new ones, that's great, but I don't get upset that the movies are following the people the story was originally about.

And I've heard a lot about the "lightening" of the tone and it seems like it could mean a lot of different things. I don't think there's cause to worry just yet. I think the box-office history has indicated that going too extreme too quickly turns off audiences, so I can see why they'd do baby-steps away from the main movies to begin with. If it does well, then they could definitely start branching out.

The reshoots are because the guy they hired is an art school hack who made two monster movies which forgot to include the monsters on basis that teasing the audience was more fun for him, and he did the same thing with the Star Wars franchise. All tease and no pay off, but Disney are a lot less forgiving than Legendary and Warners are on that sort of crap.

I loved Godzilla 2014 to be honest. But I understand why people don't.

I'm of two minds. I'm trying to avoid reading any spoilers or gossip, and I don't really know what's going on, but tbh if they are reshooting the movie to make it more upbeat...then they are going for my demographic, because I really don't want more grim and grit in my life right now.

And I honestly think upbeat star wars is more likely to sell well, from a crass commercial standpoint.

I get what you're saying that there should be room for all sorts of SW stories, though. That's a legitimate point.

My feeling watching the trailer for it was, "Well, I probably won't like this one much, but the more the merrier! Lots of SW of all sorts!"

So, yeah. I'll probably like it better if they make it more lighthearted. But there's nothing wrong with not every movie having the same tone, either.

Do you think sticking to a tone prevents the telling of different stories, or the exploring of different parts of the universe?

Generally when you're making a series, you want each part to feel like it belongs to that series.

You can do that without having it be cookie cutter.

The main series more or less is about war but it's rather light on actual seriousness. The books (the ones still canon) are part of the series too and they're often more serious.

I'm not asking for Star Wars Citizen Kane, but I was at least mildly excited about a war movie that isn't super quippy and filled with plucky people.

I heard it was for a specific cameo, nothing more.

Nope. 40% of the movie is being reshot, and Chris McQuarrie -the script writer- has been flown in to supervise Edwards and make sure he sticks to the script this time. Basically Edwards turned in a real Josh Trank of a film but Disney are not Fox and are actually making him fix it properly.
