Natasha

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2016-06-02 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)

On Tuesday, we had to make the call to say goodbye to lovely Natasha. She and her "brother" Boris were rescued from being born into some really horrible conditions at a hoarder's place. Ultimately, she never fully recovered. It's never a good sign when your vet says she's never even seen a case like this before-- she had feline infectious peritonitis (dry form, making diagnosis even more difficult). We'd been managing it some with steroids and stuff, and had hoped to get a few more comfortable weeks for her.

Natasha declined suddenly over the long weekend, and I was the only one home to care for her. It was very hard to see her go through the same sad behaviors as our last cat Chrestomanci did in his last days-- but even worse, because Chresto was 15 and had been getting typical elderly cat conditions for quite some time, whereas Tasha was barely 1 year old.

But there was nothing we could do. She's at peace now. I'll always remember her adorable checkered toes, her rice-cooker purr, and her beeping noises. I just wish we'd had more time with her.

She looks like such a lovely cat. But, if she was really sick, maybe it's ultimately the better outcome for her? In any case, it's always sad to lose a beloved pet. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry, she was very pretty and I'm sure you gave her a good life.

(I lost my 16 year old grumpy-cat today so I offer you nothing but understanding hugs and love).

Oh man, that is so sad. How awful that she never really got a chance at life because of being born into bad conditions.

I'm glad she had you and your family to love her before she went.

How is Boris doing?

(Also, she is gorgeous, and also also, Natasha and Boris are fabulous names for cats)

I'm so grateful to the lady who fostered Boris and Natasha back to stability when they were rescued; she also has Natasha's litter-mate brother (who's blind) and another girl kitten from the same place. But Natasha (aka Beeps) obviously had already contracted the coronavirus and it went through whatever mutation causes FIP.

Boris is the picture of health, almost 11 pounds of loveable affectionate energetic fun. It was really seeing how he was thriving that made us notice a few months ago that Natasha wasn't doing nearly so well-- even if she was a smaller, dainty lady cat, she shouldn't have been that small and so lethargic. I think he is noticing that she isn't around. Mostly he is noticing that the good wet food isn't being served any more. She was on a special diet trying to get her weight up and he would get a little taste every so often when she was done.

It was kinda difficult to pick pair names that everyone in my family could agree on. Ultimately we went with that because Boris is predominantly Russian Blue. There were lots of good M/M pair names (Hal and Hotspur and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were possibilities) but not so many F/M ones. I wanted to call them Sapphire and Steel, myself, because of her eyes and his coat. But we could agree on these, and everyone who gets the reference really likes the names.

Awww, poor kitty! But even if she had a short life and a bad start, at least she ended her days in a loving home.

Hugs to you for giving her that.

If nothing else, you should take comfort in the fact that you did your best for her. At the very least she got a chance to experience real love before she passed on; it's more than some animals get, unfortunately.

If there is an afterlife, I am quite sure she'll be waiting for you.
