I've found that it kind of helps to acknowledge those moments that seem "off" within the fic itself in some manner. A little foreshadowing. That signals to the reader that yes, there is something weird going on, but it's a deliberate plot point rather than a mistake in characterization.

Ah, the problem is, many people miss the foreshadowing (and then proceed to namecalling). And I don't mean in the background, blink-and-you'll-miss-it stuff. I'm talking about "if I made it any plainer, I'd be spelling it out".

And I know it's not a writing fail on my part because both my betas and other readers catch on very quickly. That's when it's frustrating. When being yelled at by the.. unobservant, I guess?

That sucks. But at least you tried, even if it went over their heads. It's kind of sad how weak peoples' reading comprehension is these days, though.

One of the best things I've learnt to think as a fic writer is "Your ridiculous hangups are on you. As is your stunning lack of reading comprehension." I don't SAY this to readers, but man can people miss GIANT NEON SIGNS worth of foreshadowing.

Very true. I'm not sure if it's down to people reading too quickly or just not really thinking about what they've just read, but I'm often surprised by how poorly people comprehend something even when it's practically spoon fed to them.
