1) Buy the DVD.
2) Give the DVD to someone else.

You have now shown monetary support without owning the DVD.

and, hopefully, helped spread the fandom!

How much do DVD sales actually support the creators? I know physical cd sales did not give much money to the band.

There's more to than just money, though. A show that has successful DVD sales is more likely to get another season, or get syndicated, or to get picked up by Netflix or whatever. That's worth a great deal in the business, because it means more interest and exposure. OP is not likely to be able to give an amount to the creator that's worth as much as say, getting another season of the TV show.

It was the same way with CD sales back in the day when CD sales actually mattered. Getting X amount per sale was good, but the point was that you broaden your audience, who'll listen to your stuff, buy your next CD, maybe buy a concert ticket when you tour, then buy merch, etc. etc.

...and the record company wants to keep you under contract and you might be able to negotiate for more money from them next time around...

Or, in the case of TV, you get to keep your job when the show gets renewed and it looks better on your resume when you go to look for your next job because it was a more popular show and people have heard of it.

Yep. That's why giving money directly is nice, but because you're bypassing the industry, you're also bypassing all the standards of measurement in how the industry measures success. So if OP wants a particular TV show to continue, they really need to support the show itself, not just the creator.
