(Anonymous) 2016-06-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)The book's considered a feminist fantasy classic because it did something that hadn't really been done much at the time - namely retelling a very male-centric myth from a female perspective, in a way that recast a character generally viewed as nothing more than "generic evil harlot witch" as a flawed but very human being - and did it in a way that made it popular. It doesn't really stand up well when examined against the backdrop of current feminist fantasy, but it was a pretty big deal at the time it was written.
