Now that you mention that, I know what you mean and maybe that's what they were going for? With a better execution, more people might have caught that, but in the end, it's not really an imagery that has been used in x-men movie posters or even superhero movie posters in general before, so it's not like the majority of people would even get the reference.

Also that still doesn't rectify possible concerns about the level of violence displayed.
