I recommended it this time last year, but:
Neil Munro's "Para Handy". It is a Scottish classic, and has been the basis of at least three BBC adaptations (not to mention being used as the source material for movie which -barely- changed the names to avoid paying royalties). It is a collection of short stories and novellas which chronicle the hijinks and escapades of the crew of the Puffer "The Vital Spark", one of a class of boats that in the late 19th and early 20th century connected the city of Glasgow with the remote Scottish communities of the islands and coastal communities of the West of Scotland. It is well worth a read, and it is a master class on the use of dialect and phonetic accent in fiction.
