Necessary, yes, sometimes. (For instance, I don't think my mother will EVER get away from my father, and even if she did, I think my father would rather eat his left testicle than pay alimony, but IN A KINDER WORLD, I think she would honestly need alimony.)

Fair? I highly doubt it. I mean, it's a legal thing, and legal stuff is rarely fair. (See, my friend, who has to pay her abusive ex-wife alimony. Imagine that, having to pay money to someone who treated you like shit.)
