I wish those posts guilting people for not reblogging art/social justice posts/WHY IS NOONE TALKING ABOUT THIS THING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT?! would fuck the fuck off.

For one thing, it's arrogant bullshit to try and dictate what other people share on their dashboards. For another, me reblogging to my entire seven followers will do absolutely fuck-all to get you the exposure you so desperately crave.

The latest one: Apparently if you only like and don't reblog anti-racist statements you're contributing to making fandom hostile for PoC.

Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk yoouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

I'm not on tumblr, but I dislike this attitude in general. Back in college, I hated having to pass through the gauntlet of student group tables in the lobby of the student union because most of them were trying to guilt everyone into joining/donating/volunteering something (the groups who weren't all about specific ~*causes*~ didn't set up tables) and sometimes they'd even say "Oh, I guess you don't care about [thing]!" as I'd walk away. I'd think "You know nothing about me. You don't know how I spend my time or what issues I might be trying to do something about. HOW DARE you suggest I'm a waste of space just because I'm not supporting your pet cause in the manner you deem acceptable!" There are A LOT of important issues out there and we all have only so many hours in a day, only so much energy, and only so much money. We can't all fix everything. In fact, it's better of we split up the effort and focus on different things.

Oh man, I remember and HATE those.

I think my personal favorite anon message was, "I am going to unfollow you because you reblogged something where the original source was transphobic, and that deeply upset me," and I'm like, "I'm sorry, but really, how can I POSSIBLY know the online reputation of EVERY source of EVERY post I reblog?"

I carefully control my tumblr reading list because of stuff like that.

By listening to the people who send you messages and doing something about those messages?

I did, but at the same time, the tumblr user they were complaining about was someone as far as I know never encountered again, and their transphobia was completely unrelated to the thing I reblogged.

I mean, I do try to listen, and I want to avoid completely douchey people, but at the same time, trying to chase down whether the source of every puppy picture I reblog has said something douchey is a goose chase that wastes my time with very little payoff. (Also deeply stresses me out. Sometimes, I just want to enjoy a cute picture of a puppy.)

Unfollow immediately, there's no shaking off that irritation when it's all over your dash. I assure you there are sane people posting things you like!

The pro-shoplifters piss me off especially their "If you are antishoplifting then you are transphobic" bullshit. I wish I never explored the shoplifting tag.

Apparently some of them claim they are too poor for the surgery and too poor to buy the expensive make up and other items to make up they need so they steal it and then post pictures of it on their blogs.

and those that are not trans they shoplift because they are for communism and if you are against them then you are a capitalist pig.

They claim they re not hurting anyone and even when people who work in retail tell them the truth the lifters stick their fingers in their ears.

and of course Tumblr does nothing. I wish I could dox these lifters.

So basically they're entitled fuckfaces who come up with ad hoc excuses as to why they should continue to be allowed to be fuckfaces.

Pretty much.

Re: Tumblr/fandom Rant(s)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
That...is the dumbest reasoning imaginable. Holy shit.

My family's been poor, too. There were plenty of things we wanted or needed that we couldn't afford.

At no time whatsoever did any of us ever think, "Hey, let's just steal it instead!" Good god. It sucked to go without those things, but somehow we managed to get by.

(To say nothing of the stupidity of posting photos of things you stole online. If you're going to insist on being a criminal, at least go all the way and be smart enough to cover your damn tracks.)

Wait what does shoplifting have to do with being trans?!

There's a post in the main tags like this:

Me: Oh [fandom] blog, I don't follow enough of those! *follows*
Blog: omg [ship portmanteau] !!!
Me: *unfollows*

#snide comment about the ship

People put stuff like that in the main tags sometimes and it annoys me. I think it'd annoy me less if it wasn't for the fact that most of the shippers are really diligent about tagging their posts so it's easy for people to blacklist, and also don't put the main fandom tags on their posts. Basically, the shippers tend to go out of their way to be respectful of the rest of fandom, so it'd be nice if that respect was given back.

But hey it's shipping, people get ridiculous about it.

Oh man, don't get me started. Most recently, I just turned anon comments for a while, because I was getting tedious derailing bullshit because I was posting about local clan leaders.

Then there was someone calling fandom 'klandom.' Now you might wonder why. Was there some really gross fandom racism going on?

No. It was because a very small, informal, loose poll about avatars in Dragon Age came up with roughly twice as many white people playing avatars of color than people of color. Terms like 'digital blackface' were thrown around and I was just like, "???"

Re: Tumblr/fandom Rant(s)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
But of course if white people had mostly polled as playing white characters, they'd be called racist for not wanting to play as POC. You really can't win.

Enh, I'm not even sure I'd WANT to win a contest like that.

Re: Tumblr/fandom Rant(s)

OP - You'll no doubt be astounded to learn it was Dragon Age fandom that prompted my initial rant too. Klandom. Oh my God. That doesn't even make sense. Surely the last thing a KKK member would want is someone of another race on screen all the time.

Re: Tumblr/fandom Rant(s)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2016-06-06 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, the thing is, the INCREDIBLY passionate response was on a poll that is REALLY full of holes. Like, the poll-runner freely admitted to not asking for demographics of who played white avatars, so there's that big missing component.

And also: FOR CHRISSAKES IT WAS SOMEONE RUNNING A TUMBLR POLL. Everything involved in that has to be taken with a HUUUUUUGE grain of salt. Like, just off the top of my head, here are things that come to mind:

Some folks may just NOT WANT to divulge their race online. Some folks may be biracial and get deeply uncomfortable having to decide whether they get to 'count' as one or the other. Some folks might worry that disclosing their preference would get them harassed. Also, it might depend on the demographics of the followers and rebloggers of the original poster.

What I'm saying is, there are LOTS of reasons that might weight the results. You know?
