I've been in fandom for seemingly forever. I loved the heyday of fic and meta and everything else on LJ. So this has formed the views I hold of fandom.

On FlightRising, someone posted a link to RPF smut on an Art for Fodder thread. They then got tons of hate mail, including calls to kill themselves. They posted an apology to an anon comm, saying that because of this they were leaving, and I responded with YKINMK (and that's okay) and that I was sorry they were getting this level of hate. I acknowledged that some RPF people take it too far by contacting the people involved or their significant others, and that wasn't okay, but the original fantasy wasn't wrong.

I was blasted. Told I was creepy and condoning sexual harassment. (As it seems all RPF is considered sexual harassment now.) I was told "Not to mention that's a pretty shitty outlook to take on kinks to just blanket statement that that shit can never hurt anyone. Media can normalize shit and not all kinks are fucking equal." among other things.

And someone else went off on how creepy it was to deage characters to 17 & 20 to have a romance, because "the children!" And I didn't respond to that, but didn't really have an issue with it either. It's not my thing, but 17 is above the age of consent in a lot of places and the age gap isn't that big.

And now, sitting over in my corner with my "YKINMK" flag, I feel like fandom's version of a racist grandmother. And that I don't belong in fandom anymore.
