I dont get it

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Can anyone explain why this show is such a big deal? It just seems like a stupid show about cars and stuff. Typical dude bro type of thing.

Why is this so popular in fandom circles (which are mostly female and don't usually care about cars and gears type of stuff) and why do I keep seeing this show brought up all the time? Comparable shows where I live definitely don't have a fandom and and if they do, the fans are certainly not female.

Lots of guys like it. Fandom w/ women tends to find one or more of the hosts attractive. But overall, I think all the fans over whatever the gender mostly just like the humor of the show. If you've watched it, it's "about cars" but in a large part, it's about silly humor. Think "three men in a boat" with cars.

It's slightly dudebro-ish, but the appeal of it goes beyond cars. To me, Top Gear is a sort of lowest common denominator type of entertainment. You don't need to be a gearhead to get it. You don't even need to know anything about cars, because it's all pretty basic: expensive cars driven at high speeds by morons.

a) it's ridiculously funny
b) the hosts (the previous trio) are entertaining, clever, have good chemistry, and can be found appealing by women (cos tastes vary, you know)
c) it's beautifully filmed
d) it's really quite funny
