Since I wasn't following this case, I thought I'd better look up the story, because "rape" is defined so broadly.

Wow. Raping an unconscious woman is very bad; and six months is a pretty short term. I don't think it should have been shorter. But still, it is a felony conviction, which will follow him through his life. And again, six months is real prison time, and unless it was just time already served, it would count as an appropriate sentence when you're just concerned about justice and not putting more bodies on the chain gang.

My point is that something can be very bad and not call for sending a 20-year-old to prison until he's 40.

That Americans think the super-long sentences should be mandatory is the real miscarriage of justice in this story.

Well, how about until he's 25? Or 30? With the entitled attitude he has going, just how long do you think he will take to learn his lesson? And, yes, I realize that "jail" is no walk in the park, but the county lockup is, as I said above, a far cry from the state penitentiary.

This case sends a twofold message:
1. If you are a woman and a rich kid rapes you, don't bother reporting it. You will be raked over the coals by his lawyer and your rapist will get a slap on the wrist.

2. If you are a rich kid and rape a woman, lawyer up and you will get a slap on the wrist. Because, you know, we wouldn't want to ruin your life or anything, poor baby.

nail meet head.

like did you (general you) read her statement? it's been more than a year since her attack and she's still super fucked up. that's MORE THAN FOUR TIMES the time her rapist will spend in prison.
