Re: TW Rape
(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 03:53 am (UTC)(link)There's a lot of validity to saying that the American legal system should be more merciful. But you can think that at the same time as you recognize the specific facts in this case are outrageous to any reasonable observer. There are problems with the American justice system. One of those problems is that the system is disproportionately harsh on poorer offenders and light on richer ones; another is that sexual crimes against women are given disproportionately light sentences. As long as those general factors are the case, I think a case like this is going to be viewed with outrage.
Re: TW Rape
(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 09:42 am (UTC)(link)I'm inclined to say (having grown up in a family of people in law enforcement and the justice and penitiary system) that 6 months is not really that light a sentence, especially for a first-time offender under 21, but I say that coming from a legal system that works differently.
Specifically, I think stuff like these lifelong sex offender records are bullshit and often either abused by the defense to argue how their client didn't deserve to be branded or ridiculously harsh toward people who dare caught doing a public exposure prank.
