Piggybacking off my thread above, I HATE that I can't convince my antivax relatives that vaccines don't cause autism, because they know someone with an autistic kid who's mom is CONVINCED he didn't have it until after he was vaccinated, and no amount of "but I found a scholarly article" trumps what they view as "real life experience."

My parents were crazy anti-vaxxers long before the whole Wakefield debacle started. I had to get vaccinated for a bunch of stuff as an adult because I didn't feel like dying or infecting immunocompromised people. Maybe I should make a "I wasn't vaccinated and I have autism" t-shirt.

My mom thinks autism didn't exist until vaccines started coming into use.

Ughhhh I've seen that too. Yes, it just spontaniously appeared in the 70s, it's not like diagnostics changed at all that decade or anything.

Have you talked to them about the age correlation with vaccines and autism symptoms? I figure you probably have, but I'm curious about your response.

I have some extended family members who are anti-vaxxers (they have three little boys and it makes me very sad), but nobody I interact with on a daily basis (at least who I know is one).

I tried but they didn't want to talk at the time and now it's just never come up at the right time.

Well, I have real life experience too, and my son was, looking back, clearly autistic long before he had his shots. So they can believe me AND all the science, or just believe some other person.

Wouldn't that be nice. I'll be sure to bring it up next time we talk about it, but mostly no one wants to listen to me vent about vaccines anymore.
